Scalextric – where and how did it start?
We are all familiar with this famous brand name, but where did it come from, and where did it all begin?
We have to go back to 1947, a company called Mini Models Ltd based in London, moving in 1954 to Havant Hampshire, producing some very nice tin plate models known as Startex and Scalex. These were basically clockwork cars that were operated by a friction wheel or a pull cord (cleverly disguised in the steering wheel or exhaust pipe).
In 1957 they came up with the innovative idea of a slot and electricity, in a mass-produced product and Scalextric — scalex(elec)tric – was born. Initially using their tin plate car bodies with a re worked chassis to accommodate the new electric motor.
The company was sold to the three Lines brothers (Triang) in November 1958. (A name that again we all know, but probably never realised the connection, the family surname was Line, three Lines make a triangle, hence the name and the trademark you will find on your old Scalextric Cars).
In 1960 the use of plastic was introduced, and whilst many competitors have come and gone, clever marketing has evolved Scalextric into the household name for slot racing.
We are pleased to offer a full range of Scalextric l957 – to present day, along with the more recent competitors Fly Ninco SCX etc.
