• In writing this book, my goal was to catalog slot car companies that have contributed to the evolution of the hobby, however big or small. The businesses included all found a way to be a historical part of slot car racing by offering items that were innovative and quality-driven, or inexpensive but with mass appeal.
• Slot Cars are still the ultimate Christmas gift! In December 1957, Bob Coogan wrote an article for the Sports Cars Illustrated holiday issue titled “The Ultimate Christmas Gift.”Coogan saw the potential slot car racing had as a hobby-sport not only for kids but especially for adults. That article brought attention to slot car racing and exposed it nationwide in grand style; with Polk’s Hobbies in New York City also pushing and promoting the sets, model racing or slot car racing spread like wildfire to the point where Scalextric could not produce and ship the sets fast enough from England to supply the fast-growing market demands.
